As announced back in July, Ford is getting ready to enter NASCAR series next, after going through all the NASCAR submission and approval process. The next step towards the entry was taken this week, as the manufacturer unveiled one of the Mustangs to participate at the junior circuit in the hands of Colin Braun.
“This truly marks the start of the next era of Mustang racing,” Brian Wolfe, Ford North America Motorsports director said at the unveiling. “We fully expect this Mustang, with drivers like Colin behind the wheel, to start to enjoy the kind of success so many other Mustang racing programs have enjoyed throughout the last four decades."
Ford will have three entries starting next year, the other two being the 2010 Fusion (Sprint Cup) and the 2009 Ford F-Series (Camping World Truck Series). For the NASCAR Mustang, the American manufacturer retained the classic Mustang body style.
According to Jack Roush, starting next year there could be as many as five Mustangs in Nationwide.
“My teams have won several road racing championships over the years in Mustangs, and I look forward to winning more with Colin, Carl and Ricky. With the continued support of Ford and Con-way Freight we plan to give Colin the opportunity for his second Rookie of the Year title in NASCAR, and ultimately a Nationwide Series championship.”
21-year-old Colin Braun will be driving the #16 Conway Freight Ford. So far, he won 2 professional car racing championships, and 3 rookie of the year awards. Between his racing experience (he started driving at 6) and Ford Mustang's over 2,000 professional racing victories, the 2010 junior circuit will be a very entertaining one.
