Nissan Technology Square in Johannesburg

Japanese manufacturer Nissan, one of the most active players in the industry in recent years, announced today it plans to showcase its entire technology to the South African customers, through a display called Nissan Technology Square.

Located at Sandton City Shopping Center in Sandton, Johannesburg, the display will try to popularize Nissan tech to government officials, students, media and the public, in the form of a one-producer auto show.

The display marks the public debut on the South African market of the Leaf, the first and most anticipated mass-produced electric vehicle. The Leaf will be surrounded by “technologies which support mobility in the future,” meaning the range of technologies developed by Nissan over the past few years.

"We are delighted to host the Nissan Technology Square in South Africa,"
said Mike Whitfield, Managing Director of Nissan South Africa. "Through this exhibition we aim to convey Nissan's enthusiasm for research and development with our stakeholders in this region."

Separately, Nissan announced today it has begun manufacturing the aforementioned Leaf at its Oppama facility in Japan. This is the first facility to begin manufacturing the EV, with several others to follow: Smyrna, Tennessee, in the US and Sunderland, in the UK.

"Aside from being an automotive company, Nissan also has a role as a citizen of society, to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come,”
Whitfield added about the Leaf's presence in South Africa.

“We are aiming to increase awareness and interest in environmentally-friendly technologies, and we believe a major attraction will be the first mass-market 100% electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf, which we hope to introduce at some stage in the country."
