Nissan Sells 1,000,000 Gearboxes

Although most people hate automatics and associate the CVT (Continuously Variable  Transmission ) gearboxes with the lack of sportivity,  Nissan  decided to prove  them wrong and, in December 2006, elaborated  a plan, called the Nissan Green Program 2010.

The target of this plan was to sell more than a million vehicles every year, equipped with a CVT gearbox. This goal was achieved by the Asian car maker as they just recently announced the sale of 1,088,000 CVT gearboxes in 2007, a value four times bigger than the one registered in 2004.The Nissan Green Program 2010 is an attempt of the producer to introduce and promote new technologies, products and services which lead to cleaner emissions, recycling of resources and low Co2 emissions.

The first CVt gearbox developed by Nissan was first introduced in 1992 and has undergone numerous modifications and improvements  along the time line. One major step-through was accomplished in 2002, when Japanese engineers found a solution  to adapt CVT to high torque engines and delivered the world's firs CVt for large displacement engines of up to 3.5 litres.

Nowadays, aproximately 47% of Nissan cars sold in the US and 43 % of those sold on the home market, Japan, have CVT transmission.
