Nissan Ponders F1 Racing with Leaf NISMO RC

The NISMO version of the Nissan Leaf electric vehicle, the RC, is getting ready to leave the realm of show cars and take a more active, on the track role, aiming to promote the Japanese manufacturer's EV in front of a live audience.

The RC was a real head turner at this year's New York International Auto Show, enough of a head turner to prompt Nissan into creating a bright future for the model. And since it's a NISMO, racing was the only world for it.

According to WhatCar?, Nissan plans to race the RC in front of the crowds that gather at each and every Formula 1 Grand Prix across the world. Sure, it will not race it alongside the open wheelers, but would run round the tracks ahead of each of the Formula 1 races.

The show in itself would be conceived as a race between more Rcs, possibly with celebrities behind the wheel, one that would last 20 minutes. That's exactly the autonomy the batteries give the model.

“There's a lot of interest, and it would be a great thing to do, but nothing's confirmed yet. It would require agreement from the relevant parties, and we'd be happy to build the hardware, but a sponsor would have to come on board to make it happen,” Simon Sproule, Nissan motorsport head said according to the source.

The Leaf NISMO RC is fitted with the same electric drive train as is the regular Leaf (107 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque), but features an entirely new body. The changes brought to the model give it 0 to 62 mph time of 6.85 seconds and a top speed of 93 mph (150 km/h).
