Nissan Leaf in Mexico City by 2011

Japanese manufacturer Nissan will bring the all-electric Leaf in Mexico City by 2011 following a new agreement signed by the company with Mexican authorities. Nissan initially planned to launch the car globally in 2012, and in limited numbers in the US and Japan, but it is now willing to offer the electric car to Mexican buyers using the support of the local officials.

“Bringing the electric vehicle to the Mexico City market is a natural progression of Nissan’s leadership and heritage in Mexico," President of Nissan Mexicana, José Muñoz said according to leftlanenes.com.

Nissan Leaf comprises laminated compact lithium-ion batteries that generate a maximum power of 90 kW, while its electric motors produce 80 kW/280 Nm of torque. It provides a total range of 100 miles (160 km) on a full charge and also boasts regenerative braking systems designed by the parent manufacturer.

It’s the first step in what is sure to be an exciting journey – for people all over the world, for Nissan and for the industry,” said Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn.

Nissan confirmed earlier this year that US buyers will be able to make reservations for the company's electric vehicle starting spring 2010. It claims it has already received around 22,000 inquires in North America since it first unveiled the model in August.
