Since it arrived in showrooms back in 2010, the Nissan Leaf instantly became one of the most successful electric vehicle stories. In addition to great sales figures and many happy owners, the little EV is now boasting with the title of best-selling electric vehicle in the United States of America in 2014.
You heard that right! With two months still to go 'til champagne bottle corks start popping, the Nissan Leaf managed to set a new sales record Stateside. Through the end of September, the compact eco-friendly car sold 21,822 examples of the breed. By comparison, 2013 saw Nissan move 22,610 units.

Nissan is being coy on October figures 'cos there's still a day to go in the month, but we can take a wild stab in the dark at guessing the grand total. In the United States alone, Nissan managed to sell more than 2,000 Leafs per month, in some months moving in excess of 3,000. This equates to January - October sales of over 23,822, trumping 2013 by 788 units.

The Leaf's success is also the result of Nissan being considerate with making it affordable for the masses. With pricing starting at $22,000 after the $7,500 federal tax credit, it's no wonder the cheeky Leaf sold better than the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, BMW i3, Ford Focus Electric or the pretty expensive Tesla Model S.

Even if sales have surged by more than 36 percent in the US alone and global sales surpassed 142,000 vehicles, the Leaf has been bettered by engineers since it was launched four years ago. As a brief reminder of what the Japanese model can do, the 2015 Leaf can travel up to 84 miles (135 kilometers) on a full charge and a fast-charging station can juice the battery up to 80 percent capacity in half an hour.
