The Nissan LEAF is currently struggling to remain relevant in a market where its maximum range of 155 miles (250 kilometers) just doesn't cut it anymore.
It may still hold the title for the best-sold electric vehicle throughout the world, but its latest numbers don't look very encouraging. And it's not just the range that's holding the LEAF back, but also its design. While the electric Nissan is by no means an ugly car, it can't hide the fact it was released all the way back in 2010.
The Renault ZOE, for instance, has somehow made the jump to a 200-mile electric range, but the LEAF still uses a 30 kWh battery that can only do so much. Nissan seems to be content with waiting for the new model to launch and doesn't do all that much to keep the fire going for the current one.
However, it did find the time to release a new special edition, and the car looks like it was dipped into a box of black shoe polish. Which is kind of fitting considering it's called the LEAF Black Edition, but not exactly what people would expect a battery-powered vehicle to look like.
That's probably the whole idea behind Nissan's choice, with the car featuring 16" black alloy rims, LED headlamps, privacy glass, black door mirror caps, and black rear roof spoiler. On the inside the black floor mats come with blue stitchings.
On the tech side, the Black Edition is based on the Acenta trim and comes equipped as standard with the newest version of the NissanConnect EV telematics system and the Around View Monitor technology
"The Nissan LEAF Black Edition offers our customers stylish, premium design in an affordable mass-market 100 percent electric vehicle," said Gareth Dunsmore, Director of Electric Vehicles at Nissan Europe. "We are committed to delivering innovation that excites and this vehicle does just that, with our leading Around View Monitor technology offering customers a more confident drive – embodying Nissan Intelligent Mobility.”
The Nissan LEAF Black Edition will be available between March and August 2017, and the first 1,000 buyers will also get a complimentary Wi-Fi hotspot capable of serving up to eight devices. Not exactly the few extra miles of range that the people would want, but we guess it'll have to do.
