Nissan Discontinues The Pathfinder Hybrid, Infiniti QX60 Hybrid Stays for Now

Last year in October, the Nissan Pathfinder received a set of enhancements for the 2015 model year aimed to make the mid-sized crossover more desirable, but nothing unusual so far.
However, the Japanese carmaker will not keep the Pathfinder Hybrid in its lineup, because "hybrids make a lot of sense in other applications, but not this particular one.”

These words belong to Nissan spokesman Dan Bedore, cited by Autonews, who found out the Pathfinder Hybrid will not make a comeback as a 2016MY.

The reasons for this move are quite evident. For starters, Nissan stopped assembling the Pathfinder Hybrid in January, due to falling gasoline prices in the US. Also, customers have regained their soft spot for SUVs and trucks after eight years of economic recession.

However, despite the recent care for the environment and obsession with fuel economy and prices, not everyone is willing to spend money on a hybrid Pathfinder.

According to the same source, the two-wheel-drive Pathfinder Hybrid wears a $3,000 higher sticker than the regular Pathfinder, but only offered an additional four mpg, combined, city, and highway.

Therefore, the Pathfinder Hybrid's exit from Nissan's 2016 model year lineup should be viewed as a financial decision, not one that would suggest Nissan doesn't want to carry on with hybrids anymore.

Nissan will continue to sell the gasoline-drinking Pathfinder, as will Infiniti keep on offering the QX60 hybrid - basically Pathfinder's fancy cousin. The car will remain in production at Nissan's Smyrna, Tennessee assembly plant and will gain 2016MY upgrades.
