Next-Gen VW Beetle to Get Clean Diesel in the US

Volkswagen will offer a clean diesel option in the United States for the next-generation Beetle as well as an electric version of the Up! hatchback, Volkswagen Group of America President Stefan Jacoby confirmed. The new Beetle will be released in the US as 2012 model while the Up! will go stateside in 2014.

Jacoby hasn't released details concerning the diesel unit but the future Beetle is also expected to come with several enhancements, including significant design upgrades. The VW official said back in October that the new Beetle will be "more of a halo car" and explained that it will boast more interior space and better packaging.

"There is a great opportunity with the Beetle and the emotional fabric it has to offer," he said.

Volkswagen displayed at the Los Angeles Auto Show the Up! Lite concept, a model that will be built in Germany and will initially go on sale in Europe, as Ulrich Hackenberg, head of technical development for Volkswagen AG, said in a statement.

The Lite is the world's most fuel-efficient four-seater, according to VW figures, having an estimated fuel consumption rate of 2.44 l/100 km (70 mpg highway). This amazing figure is achieved thanks to a combination between a turbo-diesel engine, an electric motor and 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). As a direct consequence, the Up! Lite emits some 65 g of CO2/km.

The engine has a 0.8l displacement and develops only 51 PS. The electric motor adds 10 kW of power, as it acts as a pulse start module (starter, alternator and E-drive).
