New Subaru Legacy Ad Is Sickeningly Sweet

We don’t really know who Subaru is targeting with this little ad for the 2011 Legacy - Asian Americans, young dads, young mothers... whatever - but it's so sweet that's sickening. The campaign has been produced in Cantonese, Mandarin and English, and can be seen across a wide variety of media placements including TV and print.

The spot is called “Sweet Tomorrow” and shows a young Asian American coupl preparing for the birth of their first child. The proud father is buying everything - baby bottles, toys and bed. He even learns how to cook and how to pick fruit from the market. It all looks... to good to be true.

“Sweet Tomorrow centers on the lives of expectant parents and emphasizes the reliability of the Subaru brand. It tells the story of a young Chinese couple balancing tradition with their Chinese-American lifestyle. The campaign shows the couple preparing for parenthood and introduces Subaru as their choice for safety and comfort in the next chapter of their lives,” Subaru says.

“Potential Subaru owners in target markets for this campaign are younger than the general market. The early to late 30s demographic is depicted through life stage and style cues, such as preparing for the birth of a child; hobbies; attire and décor,” the company added.

We know that the Japanese company really needs the sales, but making a commercial this obvious could backfire. After all, it’s going to be the young dads that will buy the car wanting to drive it, and they might not wish to be associated with this rosy image.

The will continue to air through October 2011, so there is plenty of time to decide if the car is the baby carrier for you.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
