New Scirocco Rumored for 2017 with Hardcore "RS" Version

Volkswagen is sure taking its sweet time with the current generation Scirocco coupe. A bit like MINI hardtop, it's a throwback to bygone years, but unlike the Brit the generations aren't coming in hard and fast. A facelift for the 'Rocco was just revealed in Geneva earlier this month, almost 6 whole years into the life cycle of the car. So when is the next generation coupe finally due and what's it going to be like?
According to CAR magazine's insiders ‘After 2014’s  facelift, we have three more years before the replacement is due.' With 9 whole years on the shelf, the 2017 replacement is at least starting to take shape. But with three years to go, we're going to take the proverbial grain of salt with this report.

The overall design will remain largely based on the same two-door wide FWD coupe body, with a very sexy boot and somewhat crammed 2+2 layout. The major change is that while the current model looks like a hatchback, the slope of the roof on the next one will be more pronounced. The front over will be shorter and the lip of the boot will be lower to gain practicality. That, to us, sounds like they're cooking a cheaper Audi TT of sorts.

Since the Scirocco is currently classed as a compact and based on the Golf 6, don't be surprised when MQB underpinning find their way under the new model. This will mean a slight reduction in weight and access to everything the Golf, Leon and A3 gets, mainly focusing on large 2.0 TSI and TDI units.

According to car, the R model will go from 280 hp to 300 hp, needing 4Motion all-wheel drive to handle itself. This, considering VW's reluctancy to undermine the Golf R, seems a little off to us. What's not off is the Scirocco's claim to fame, a scorching RS with 330 hp. Considering all the rumors of S3 plus this and Golf R Evo that, it's not a far-fetched idea.
