New Prius May Get Styling Change to Broaden Appeal

The Toyota Prius has easily one of the most recognizable shapes on the road today, and everywhere from California to India, people know what it is, how it works and who makes it - Toyota has really succeeded, not that they needed any more confirmation.
However, in the pursuit of ultimate efficiency, the Prius has ended up looking rather odd, and while its shape is genuinely recognizable, it’s not what you’d call pretty. Now, they are mulling the idea of whether or not to change its design, for the next generation, either by a little, or by a lot, as Chris Hostetter, Toyota’s U.S. group vice president of strategic planning, said: “Maybe our architecture has been a little bit similar for the last two generations [. . .] one of the avenues we’re exploring right now is to evolve it, and the other is to really evolve it.

This is a dangerous job, because so far they’ve worked quite hard to popularize the Prius (and its slightly awkward shape), so changing it may be like shooting themselves in the foot. It may prove a huge success, or it may detract from what they have already achieved with three generation of wedge-shaped Prius.
