New M3 Rumored to Get Turbo 3.2 Straight-Six and Electric Power Steering

So much praise has the electric power steering system in the new Porsche 911 (991) received that, according to Bimmerfile, BMW will be fitting the car with the exact same system, made by ZF. The calibration of the system will be left for the manufacturer to do, but the mechanical parts will be similar, if not identical.
Also, sources at bimmertoday.de have hinted at what may lie under the bonnet of the F80 M3. Apparently, BMW will be using bespoke engine - a straight-six unit, with a twin-turbo system, displacing 3.2-liters, which should put out around 450 hp (allowing it to reach 280 Km/h or 175 mph), or 480 hp with a ‘performance package’, enabling the car to top 300 Km/h (186 mph).

Reports suggest that V6 engines, code named “Apollo”, were also tested as alternatives to what could power the future M3, but they were dropped in favor of the straight-six. As the world’s current economic climate doesn’t really take kindly to V8s any more, we have to face the fact downsizing is also affecting performance cars, and it may make them extinct in the (not too distant) future.

The 2018 M3, for instance, may even be powered by a 2.0-liter, at the rate at which things are going, and there’s no denying it - it may even be a hybrid!
