When we first saw the spec sheet of the new BMW X3 LCI we immediately knew that the two new diesel engines used on the sDrive18d and xDrive20d models will soon migrate to other models.
We were apparently right, as BMW just announced that the refreshed 5 Series will also get these new powerplants, starting this summer. Therefore, the 518d and 520d models (and their Touring counterparts) will be featuring brand new EU6 compliant diesel engines starting July.

The 518d model will be using a 2-liter turbocharged diesel 4-cylinder unit making 150 HP and 360 Nm (266 lb-ft) of torque, 7 HP more than the one it replaces.

On the other hand, the 520d models will be having 190 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque at their disposal now, 6 HP more than before. BMW claims that these power improvements were achieved by using an aluminum crankcase with thermally joined liners for optimisation of internal friction coefficients, integrated balance shafts, a new oil-pump and a new turbocharging system with variable geometry while the Common Rail injectors’ boost has been increased to 2,000 bar.

With the new specs, the 518d now is even more efficient, returning a fuel consumption between 4.3 and 4.7 liters /100km (54.7 - 50 mpg). The 520d is just as efficient. Both the Sedan and Touring 520d models will be available with xDrive all-wheel-drive too, from July.
