Among the batch of 17 vehicles that are to roll on European roads and have been tested recently by the Euro NCAP agency, one of the most interesting results comes from the all-new Chevrolet Malibu. This mid-size sedan was designed by GM for the global market, to be sold in some 100 countries, so it’s quite surprising to see that it aced stringent European test.
Near perfect scores were receive in adult occupant protection with the exception of the side impact pole test, where rib deflection resulted in the area receiving a marginal score. But the Malibu sedan did redeem itself with a perfect showing when it came to the whiplash protection.
As for child occupant protection, forward movement of this dummy, sat in a forward facing restraint, was not excessive. In the side impact, both the 3 year and the 18 month dummy were properly restrained by their restraints, minimizing the likelihood of dangerous head contact.
The front bumper of the Chevrolet Malibu provided good protection in most areas tested but was poor in some. The front edge of the bonnet was predominantly poor.
ESC is standard equipment across the Malibu range and met Euro NCAP's test requirements. A seatbelt reminder is provided for the driver and front passenger seating positions, but a speed limiter is not available.
