Here’s what autoevolution know about the Audi R8’s future: a facelifted version will bring a new front end and some slight power increases for both the V8 and V10. We expected it to be unveiled in Frankfurt based on some production scheduling for the double-clutch gearbox that will replace the current single-clutch, but it will most likely come in the Spring of 2012.
Other significant changes will come with the next generation. Audi is systematically replacing V8s with turbocharged V6 units, and they are also working on a really powerful version for their SUVs, which could also see life in the R8. Some prototypes have been reportedly been spotted with the 2.5-liter straight-six and a rear-wheel drive configuration, which sounds really cool, but will likely not see production any time soon.
Significant new pieces of information about the next generation sprotscar have come from Dutch magazine Autovisie, which says a replacement is coming in 2014, packing a lighter and much stiffer chassis.
According to the Audi chief of development, a new aluminum space frame has been put together and it only weighs 200 km, instead of the 222 kg of the current R8 chassis. We’re really concerned to see if the Audi R8 facelift has what it takes to take on the mighty new Porsche 911 unit the replacement arrives. We’ll remind you that the Carrera S has lapped the Nurburgring at the same pace as the GT3 RS 997, so it’s a tall order.
