Nav Devices Can Tell You Where Cops Are

You probably know that GPS systems are every useful devices that can tell you the right way when you don’t know the route but now it appears that they can also help you avoid speeding tickets.

Rather than relying on radar detectors, motorists can now benefit from the advantages of Web 2.0 and portable navigation systems to tell them where the speed cameras and cops are, blog.wired.com reported.

Shannon Atkinson launched Njection.com for petrolheads and, very soon, one of the most discussed topics appeared on speed traps and cameras.

“One of the biggest topics on the site became speed traps and cameras,” Atkinson said. "People want to know about those whether they’re a truck driver, a road warrior or just someone who wants to drive without worrying about it.”

Seeing that more and more motorists were interested in this topic, he thought of adding Speedtrap, a feature that combines drivers' tips with Microsoft Virtual Earth to identify speed traps. It can find either a real, live cop with a radar device or a speed camera, throughout the U.S. A few foreign cities were also added, such as London, Toronto and Rome.

Interested motorists can download the information directly to portable navigation devices from Garmin, Mio, TomTom and others via Njection.com.

The most interesting part is that even cops seem to have fallen in love with the feature as they expect accidents caused by speeding will decrease. Atkinson says a few police officers like the site because "they’re mostly interested in getting people to drive safely.”

Therefore cops are happy to see motorists slow down even if they do it just for a few miles in order to avoid speeding tickets.
