It's no longer a secret that Apple wants Apple Maps to be a full-time Google Maps alternative, and bringing the Detailed City Experience to all users worldwide has become a priority.
The company uses a phased model for the rollout, as it needs to collect data from each region, process the imagery, and only then release the update online.

Italy could be the next in line to receive the Detailed City Experience, as the iPhone maker has been spotted dropping placeholders in several key locations, paving the way for the introduction of 3D models.

Here's how everything works and why Italy could be one of the regions to get the DCE.

Every time when Apple gives the finishing touches to an expansion of the DCE, the company starts putting placeholders on Apple Maps in those locations where the update would introduce 3D landmarks. The placeholders are white buildings with no further details – Apple uses them as a reference point for the 3D update.

I've already told you that certain Italian cities started showing these placeholders a few weeks ago, but now, someone on Reddit has spotted more such items in Rome and Naples. It means the next regions where Apple could release the DCE are Milan, Rome, and Naples – chances are that the company will limit the rollout to these three cities, as it rarely launches full coverage for an entire country.

The tech giant has remained tight-lipped on the expansion, so expect more information in early 2024, when the DCE should begin rolling out to users in Italy.

The Detailed City Experience is the biggest update in Apple Maps' history. It uses Apple's maps and includes rich details, such as crosswalks, medians, trees, and buildings. Apple uses the DCE to completely overhaul Apple Maps on multiple fronts, so the update also introduces Look Around (Apple's competitor to Google's Street View, allowing users to explore a region using street-level imagery with high-resolution photos collected by Apple's cars).

It also pushes Apple Maps more into Waze's territory, coming with incident reporting to all regions where the DCE is supported. Drivers are allowed to flag the location of accidents, speed traps, and other hazards, so other Apple Maps users will get a warning when their routes go through the same spots.

Apple Maps on iPhone and CarPlay also improves navigation with traffic light and stop sign location information, as these points will be highlighted on the map, giving drivers more time to slow down before approaching an intersection.

Apple has yet to announce the next destination for the Detailed City Experience, so fingers crossed for the expansion to include not only Italy but also other regions, as the world needs a more advanced Google Maps alternative.
