The BMW-sourced new 1.6-liter D-4D diesel engine will make its Toyota debut on the Verso model starting next year and it will replace the old 2-liter D-4D diesel engine.
Despite the fact that the new 1.6 develops 110 bhp, which is 14 less than the actual 2-liter D-4D, it is 20 kg lighter, comes with a newly-developed dual-mass flywheel, new engine mounts and a completely redesigned electrical interface. This makes it achieve a better fuel consumption, averaging 62.8 mpg and emitting 10 g less CO2 at 119 g/km.
Moreover, the engine has been tuned to deliver a faster throttle response throughout the rev range, with a good initial response at low rpm and a linear build-up of torque as turbo boost develops.
Using the new 1.6-liter D-4D, provisional figures indicates that the new Verso will get from 0 to 60 in 12.7 seconds and it will reach a top speed of 115 mph.
