MINI Might Offer a Cooper S Diesel

Earlier today, we reported that Mazda’s U.S. division is considering fitting the next generation of the Mazdaspeed 3 (known as the Mazda 3 MPS in Europe) with a diesel powerplant, thus spreading the use of oil-burners in the hot hatch segment.

Now, it seems like the same principle might be used by BMW. According to Big Blogg, the German company might offer a diesel version for the MINI Cooper S, which will try to mix performance with low fuel consumption.

The only diesel powerplant in the current MINI range is anything but satisfying, as we are talking about a 1.6 liter unit that only delivers 112 hp.

However, a BMW insider told the aforementioned source that the MINI line-up may receive diesel incarnation of the Cooper S that would use a 2.0 liter powerplant. The engine will be based on BMW N47 2.0 liter unit.

The engine is currently found on multiple BMW vehicles and offers outputs ranging between 116 hp & 260 Nm of torque and 204 hp and 400 Nm of torque. It is unclear yet, which version of the unit would be the weapon of choice for the sporty diesel model in the MINI range.

The beefy diesel unit is also expected to be offered for the Countryman. Considering that the model comes with a weight increase, we are not talking about “hotness” anymore, but the unit should still offer decent dynamic capabilities for the crossover.

It seems like the diesel MINI Cooper S, if it will be produced, will reach the market at the middle of next year.
