MINI Finally Officially Confirms the Coupe and Roadster Are Going Out of Production

With a carefully written press release, MINI basically confirmed what has been going around online for quite some time now, but only as a tight-lipped rumor: the Coupe and Roadster models are going out of production.

Described as a natural order of things and blaming it on the ‘popularity’ of the new 3-door and 5-door hatchback models, the announcement claims that since the two have entered production together, they will also go out with a bang, hand in hand.

The two will be making room for the aforementioned Mk3 models on the production lines that now have to deal with no less than seven engine choices, from 1.2- to 2-liter plants. As we told you before, apparently MINI is getting back on track and focusing on what they call ‘superhero’ models that should be limited to a number of 5 at most, with some variations.

By that we mean that the hardtop in both 3-door and 5-door guises will be regarded as a sole model, joined by the Clubman, Countryman, Convertible and a possible smaller, proper city car based on a combination between the Superleggera and Rocketman concepts. The Paceman will also go out of production at some point.

The Coupe was launched back in 2011 at the 24-Hour Nurburgring race but failed to attract a numerous crowd around it mostly due to its controversial design. Therefore, after just 4 years of production, MINI decided to pull the plug.

The Roadster basically followed the same recipe but in a different body style that brought along a drop-top textile roof for enjoying sunny days but only with one passenger next to you which was rather restricting compared to the Convertible that had room for 4.

While all this seems to be happening really fast, remember that MINI is currently doing the final touch-ups on the new Convertible model that was just spotted testing by our car spy photographers. Expect it to make an official debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
