The Formula Drift driver known as "Essa" but born as Michael Essa is one of the most successful contestants ever to enter the competition. He is currently managing the GSR Autosport team and has a brand new 2005 BMW M3 with which he plans to start competing this year.
The original S54 3.2-liter engine from the M3 was fitted with a Garrett Turbocharger and now pushes out 750 HP and 650 Nm (480 lb-ft) of torque towards the rear wheels. The turbo was mounted on a custom fabricated manifold made by DOC Race and it is the only one of its kind in the world because it's designed for a twin-scroll setup.
The front suspension has been heavily modified for a tighter turning circle, especially useful in drifting competitions. The intercooler is fitted in front of the car and is massive. It has a crash bar in front of it in order to protect it from vicious encounters with protection walls while being run in different competitions.
Overall, from the original car, Essa kept only the engine, chassis and gearbox. But what more do you need? That's what makes BMWs so good. Their charm lies in the way they make you feel and not in useless details like a fancy dashboard or a "cool" sound system. The only sound system you'll ever need in a BMW is the exhaust.
