Well, one solution would be to give up the cars. But that's not really a good solution for the Yellowstone Park Foundation's (YPF) employees, who would have to trek, on foot, all the 3,472 square miles (8,987 km) of natural treasure. And it will also be a waste of 460 miles of roads (740 km).
Before the government approves some life-saving funding for the replacement of the car fleet with EVs for instance, YPF cuts its emissions any way it can. Including by fitting its vehicles with energy-saving tires supplied by Michelin.
According to the tire maker, the goal for YPF is to cut its gas emissions in the park by 30 percent by the year 2016. Even if replacing some tires would not account for all that percentage, it's a good start.
"Since Michelin became the official tire of the Yellowstone Park Foundation in 2009, the park's fleet managers have reported fuel savings on the first seven vehicles of as much as 20 percent compared to the previous tires," Don Baldwin, product category manager for Michelin Americas Truck Tires said in a statement..
"This translates into emissions savings of more than 4 tons of CO2 each year per truck. In addition, the Michelin tires are lasting twice as long as the previous tires, further reducing environmental impact."
Michelin will supply tires for YPF's haul trucks, dump trucks, front-end loaders and service vehicles. An estimate on how many tires will be shipped to Yellowstone has not been made.
