Mercedes to Push for 3-Year Extension with Brawn GP

Jenson Button's incredible winning streak this year – 6 wins out of 7 races – has certainly raised some eyebrows back at the Mercedes headquarters in Stuttgart. Being that the Brawn GP cars are powered by Mercedes power plants, the German manufacturer is likely to consider the team's immense success in Formula One as a clear argument for the engine deal between the two parties to be extended furthermore.

Ahead of the Turkish Grand Prix last weekend, it surfaced the media that Button's 3-race winning streak – Bahrain, Spain and Monaco – was completed while using the same engine. The Merc power plant then became the most efficient and long-lasting engine in Formula One's modern history, determining the car maker to even consider fitting the BGP 001 with the famous 3-point star.

As revealed by the marque's motorsport director Norbert Haug, Mercedes will push for a 3-year extension with the Brackley based team in Formula One. In addition to securing the best possible promotion of the Merc engines, the deal would also ensure a considerable amount of jobs at the company's engine headquarters in Brixworth.

I think it is very important to have a reliable, accountable engine supplier and probably do a deal (with Brawn) for the next three years,” admitted Haug.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Mercedes shed 50 jobs at Brixworth due to FIA's engine rules for the upcoming season. The German company is currently supplying power plants for 3 F1 teams: McLaren, Brawn GP and Force India (whose deal with Merc is to expire at the end of 2013).
