Mercedes to Launch A-Class Cabriolet

Mercedes has big plans for the A-Class and B-Class, and these include not only different chassis configurations - sedans, coupes, SUVs... you name it - but also a strong offensive into the untapped premium compact market in the US.
The B-Class is a bit of boring MPV in our eyes, even though it promises excellent economy figures, but the A-Class is a completely different story. To be honest, the one we see on the road is a horrible looking thing that’s only good for hotel car parks and rentals, but the Concept A-Class is so good that it makes us forget everything about that.

While looking over some of the interesting features the concept brought, we realized the two-door version would be more than a match for VW’s Scirocco in terms of looks, and we’d really love a FWD Merc with good handling.

But according to a report from Auto Express, that’s not all the A-Class’ modular platform has in store for us, as a cabrio version is also on the way. The obvious rival is the A3 Cabriolet and BMW 1-Series Convertible. We have to say there is no clear favorite in the segment, and if they manage to get everything right, Mercedes’ premium image could translate into a winner.

The engine range is supposed to comprise of a base 1.6-liter petrol and a 1.8-liter diesel with either 109 or 136 hp, it looks like the 200 Turbo engine will be bring 200 hp in this application.

What’s more, Auto Express also say the AMG version is also coming with 350 hp and all-wheel drive. Is there any car like this on the market right now? Not unless VW decides to make the Golf R Cabrio.

The A-Class Carbriolet will also have multi-link rear suspension at the back, which will improve handling and the ride, but should also make it a bit more expensive.
