Mercedes Teases 2015 MLC Coupe Crossover Rival for BMW X6

Last week, we brought you the news that Mercedes Benz was officially announcing a fifth model was going to be built at their Alabama plant by 2015. At the time, it was unclear exactly what the vehicle would be, though the fact CEO Dieter Zetsche called it a “new model” and “one of the ten additional models which we will introduce within the next four years” was clear indication this was not to be the existing GLK.
Now, further information has been shed onto the subject, as the image you see was uploaded to Twitter by Dawn_Kent and first picked up by Jalponik. It shows the shape of crossover with a coupe back end, much like the BMW X6, but even more rakish in our opinion.

According to the most recent reports, the MLC is to be based on the same platform as the new ML-Class. However, the lines of the car are said to be inspired by the CLS. Given how little room is left in the back, Mercedes is clearly focusing on the design side of things rather than practicality and off-road prowess.

Mercedes is planning an AMG version that could develop over 544 horsepower, and using the latest technologies. However, the range of fuel-efficient engines, including diesels, will start form 265 horsepower. Also, the vehicle could benefit from the M-Class all-wheel drive without the special off-road capabilities.

Given the fact that BMW has sold 120,000 X6 units since the launch in 2009, it’s no wonder that everybody wants a piece of the coupe crossover action. However, Mercedes won’t be the only challenger, as Audi will bring a similarly shaped Q6 to market, and so should Land Rover. Needless to say Porshe’s new Cajun compact crossover will also be offered as a two-door.
