Mercedes Benz has just officially announced that it will invest some $350 million and create 400 jobs at its plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to build a brand-new vehicle that has yet to be named.
At present, the M-Class, GL-Class and R-Class at the facility, and it has announced plans to build the next generation of C-Class there starting with 2014. Rumor has it that the most likely candidate for Alabama production is a new SUV based on the M-Class platform that will act as a rival for the BMW X6. Audi also has plans for a coupe-like off-roader.
Another candidate is the GLK compact crossover that is to be based on the new C-Class platform. A facelift is to arrive on the market soon, which means the 2015 start of production fits well.
“This new model from the Tuscaloosa plant is an important element of our growth strategy. It is one of the ten additional models which we will introduce within the next four years alone across all segments,” said Mercedes Benz’s CEO Dieter Zetsche, indicating that a completely new vehicle is the candidate.
