We're excited about this one. the EQS has only ever been spied once, from a distance. Many months later, we have much better images of what's supposed to be the flagship of Mercedes EVs.
As you're probably aware, Mercedes has types of EQ models, the Boost hybrids, the Power plug-ins, and the pure EVs, starting with the EQC crossover. Testing has also begun on a compact EV, but all eyes should be on this bad boy because it leads the way in terms of design too.
What do you think? It's pretty clear that Mercedes is trying to get us used to coloring outside the lines. The EQS is shaped more like a wing since the hood doesn't need to be a certain height to leave room for the engine. The headlights are similar to other Mercedes models, puled towards the mirrors and widest where they connect to the grille. Also, we think the LED signature may be similar to that of the upcoming W223 S-Class, which might debut within a year.
The coupe-like body reminds us of the IAA concept from 2015, while the rear reveals it's a hatchback, similar to the Tesla rivals or the Audi Sportbacks. This obviously makes it practical and also quite elegant.
At this point, we don't know what the interior looks like. But since Mercedes probably expects to sell a couple of tens of thousands per year, it will probably save money and just copy the W223 S-Class setup with some minor alterations.
As far as the powertrains are concerned, this coupe-saloon should have the same "guts" as the EQC, meaning an 80kWh battery and two motors offering about 400 horsepower. However, since this is an EV, we wouldn't be surprised to see a performance model, especially since the Porsche Taycan is going to debut soon.
