Cars have been constantly growing in size and receiving more and more safety and tech goodies and, besides the obvious advantages, this has also brought a major drawback: weight, an issue that affects both performance and efficiency.
However, automotive producers are making efforts to make their vehicles less scary for the scales, with the latest unofficial report linked to this stating that Mercedes-Benz is working on a carbon-fiber incarnation of the E-Class Coupe.
According to Auto Bild, Merc will use the wonder material to put the two-door on a 770 lbs (350 kg) diet, which should being the car’s weight down to 2,860 lbs (1,300 kg). Mercedes is expected to make full use of the development, so we’ll probably see a hybrid drivetrain being use and maybe we’ll even get an AMG version that will write new performance rules.
Using carbon fiber will also allow designers to play more freely, which means that we’ll probably get an innovative set of styling cues. The E-Class Superlight (this is a potential name for the project) is expected to arrive in 2015.
