Mercedes Continues to Support Schumacher

Bernie Ecclestone told the media shortly after the British Grand Prix last weekend that, unless he'll start winning some races in the near future – or at least fight for them against the championship front-runners – Michael Schumacher will probably not stick around to conclude his 3-year deal with Mercedes GP.

Those comments were later followed by even more Schumacher criticism, this time from his former Ferrari teammate Eddie Irvine, who argued that the German's decision to return to racing at the age of 41 is a huge mistake.

To pitch yourself against young men 20 years younger than you is simply against the laws of physics and medicine,” the Irishman told Germany's Sport Bild, following the 7-time world champion's 9th place finish at Silverstone.

Despite all those comments, Mercedes GP seems committed to supporting their champion all the way. As nobody was expecting a quick return to greatness in 2010 anyway– after all, the man has been vacationing for the last 3 years – everybody at Brackley seem to put their hopes into the 2011 campaign.

He (Schumacher) deserves our support, he fits with our team, he still has the speed. We believe in him, and so do his fans,” said Haug earlier this week, emphasizing the important role taken by Schu in the German organization.

Schumacher himself insisted that he is happy with what he has achieved this year, despite the fact that he's not exactly a title contender in the 2010 championship.

I'm pretty happy with myself. We have made a few mistakes and there are some things we can improve, but all in all ... I don't think there are many who can return after a three year break at the age of 41,” added the German.
