Mercedes Would Be Lucky to Win a Race in 2010 - Schumacher

Ever since the first rumors about Mercedes GP considering to switch to the 2011 car development surfaced in the media, Nico Rosberg has been asking his team not to make that move. Apparently, someone at Brackley heard his sorrow and kept pushing on the current Mercedes W01, and it all paid off during the course of the British Grand Prix.

At Silverstone, Nico Rosberg qualified 5th on the grid and went on to finish 3rd overall, his first podium appearance since the Chinese Grand Prix. Needless to say, that boosted his confidence for the second part of the season, as he now reckons he will look to improve that podium finish in the races to come.

We have made a giant step forward. I can promise more,” said Rosberg according to German newspaper Bild. Obviously, for a driver who has never won an F1 race in his career, Mercedes' push forward this season would be a sine-qua-non condition for a chance to finally lift a Grand Prix trophy above his head.

However, while Rosberg is overly optimistic about his car's potential for the second half of the season, his much experienced teammate and 7-time world champion Michael Schumacher seems to have a different view. According to the 41-year old driver, a win for Mercedes in 2010 would only come down to luck, as the W01 is still very much behind its rivals this year in terms of performance.

We will have to be very, very lucky to get a victory,” said Schumacher after the British Grand Prix, which he concluded in 9th place.

Despite the updates introduced by Mercedes in the last couple of races, Schumacher has found it difficult to improve accordingly. After recording his worst ever race finish in career in Valencia (P15), somehow explainable as he had never driven on that circuit before, he barely grabbed 2 points at Silverstone.
