Combining absurdly powerful engines and practical chassis is what the Germans do best, and they’ve managed to surpass our expectations with the CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake. It’s a long name, but than again this is a lot of car.
But the 5.5-liter engine they fitted is certainly up to the job, since it’s a twin-turbo capable of delivering 386 kW (525 hp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) in its base form. However, Mercedes is also launching the ‘Edition 1’ special version to celebrate its new model, and that will have an even more impressive 410 kW (557 hp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft). This is mated to the MCT seven-speed automatic transmission boasting dual clutches behind the steering wheel.
This translates you can launch the radical-looking estate from 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds (4.3 in the more powerful Edition 1) and on to a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).
Compared to the regular CLS Shooting Brake, the AMG model has a single-bar radiator grille, new hood, a body kit and quad exhausts, not to mention the 19-inch titanium-grey lightweight alloys.
