Mercedes CLS Gets TUV Environmental Certification

The countdown clock to the launch of Mercedes' new CLS model (January 29) has already begun taking down the numbers, with the world bracing for perhaps the most exciting version of the model ever released.

Until that moment arrives though, the car maker is trying to keep our interest up by adding a little bit of green to the car. This week, the TUV Sud handed the CLS the ISO 14062 standard environmental certification, based on a life cycle analysis of the model.

According to the auditors, the new CLS promises to be one third more eco-conscious than its predecessor, releasing into the air 21 percent less nitrogen oxide, 30 percent less CO2 and having an energy content of correspondent to 9,300 litres of petrol.

"We have been making rapid advances in efficiency such as have never been seen before in the history of the automobile. And as the inventors of the automobile, we assume particular responsibility for its future,"
said Herbert Kohler, Daimler chief environmental officer.

"We analyze the environmental compatibility of our models throughout their life cycle – from production, through their many years of usage, to end-of-life recycling. This goes far beyond mere compliance with legal requirements."

The Mercedes CLS will be launched on Sunday powered by two six-cylinder engines, hidden in the CLS 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY (265 hp) and the CLS 350 BlueEFFICIENCY (306 hp). Prices start from EUR63,427 and EUR64,617, respectively, with the model offering five interior colors, five trim designs, three types of leather and three exclusive types of wood (high-gloss brown burr walnut, high-gloss black ash and satin-finish light-brown poplar).
