Mercedes has announced a couple of high fliers to this year's edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Even though these two cars are separated by 58 years, they still have very much in common, like the fact that they have similar door design and are highly sought after.
Can you guess what cars we're talking about? Why the 1955 Mercedes 300 SLR “Uhlenhaut” Coupé and its modern day equivalent, the SLS AMG GT, the very first RHD example to arrive in the UK.

Both super sportscars are front-engined, rear wheel drive and equipped with roof-hinged “gullwing” doors. Mercedes engineers ensured there's much more in common between the two, as the SLS picks up on the use of aluminum form its ancestor and both boast hand-built, eight-cylinder engines.

The 300 SLR model that will be shown at Goodwood this year is one of only two coupes ever built and was the fastest road car of its time, capable of reaching 178 mph on the Autobahn.

Meanwhile, the SLS AMG GT is a sportier version of the SLS AMG supercar that has 591 hp (a gain of 20 hp). Its adaptive damping has been revised to ensure sharper responses and its sophisticated AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT-7 gearbox has been uprated to allow even quicker gear changes.

If you're interested in seeing what's coming to Goodwood this year, stay tuned, because we've got a lot of announcements to make. The Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place between 11 and 14 July 2013.
