For a reason which currently escapes us, the latest iteration of the Mercedes-Benz “Sonder Klasse” (“Special Class” in German) wasn't introduced on the Australian market until the recent RACV MotorClassica event, which is the Australian Concours d'Elegance, in Melbourne.
Considering that the S-Class W222 was introduced in the UK, another right hand drive country, back in September, we don't know what the special reason for the late Australian launch might be.
Considering Australia's ginormous luxury car tax we don't expect to see many German luxury cars in the land down under anyway, with CarAdvice reporting that Mercedes-Benz Australia sold just 66 S-Class W221 units this year, one less than the Porsche Panamera and 22 less than the BMW 7 Series.
The initial Aussi model lineup will consist of the S 350 BlueTec, the S 500 and the S 63 AMG – all in rear-wheel drive guise as the 4Matic system isn't available in RHD markets so far.
