With just a couple of months left until its debut, the sixth season of the Formula E series is shaping up to be one of the most spectacular yet. That’s because a host of factory teams will join the competition seen as the ideal testbed for electric technologies.
One of the most prominent names to join the party is Mercedes-Benz, who has already begun revving up the electric motors by revealing this week the car, the drivers and the team principal.

Sticking to tradition, the first Mercedes-Benz Formula E car is called Silver Arrow and wears the code 01, for being the first in what will probably be a long series. The vehicle has already been previewed at the Geneva Motor Show in March, but it is only now the Germans are showing it in racing livery.

As per the regulations of the series, the Silver Arrow uses a standard issued chassis, but the carmaker’s own inverter, motor, transmission, parts of the rear axle and the software for energy management.

Mercedes’ Formula E team is called EQ and comprises drivers Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries, and Ian James as team principal.

Stoffel Vandoorne is a Belgian professional racing driver, who from 2017 to 2018 has been racing in Formula 1 for McLaren. Nyck de Vries is a Dutch national who until now was involved in Formula 2. The team’s principal, Ian James, was at the beginning of the decade the head of program management for Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains.

“In Stoffel and Nyck, we have recruited two formidable and adaptable drivers who can continue to learn and grow with us in our debut season in Formula E,” the team principal said in a statement.

“We are doing everything we can to achieve success, but we know that we have a steep learning curve ahead of us.”

Last year, Mercedes-Benz left the DTM series to focus on Formula E, making this entry the Germans' first significant development in motorsports in recent years.
