Mercedes Benz Releases Video of SLS AMG F1 Safety Car in Action

Mercedes Benz has just released a full-length trailer showing the Mercedes-Benz’s SLS AMG F1 safety car in action. The German carmaker wasn’t in the mood for talking, saying that it’s just a car, on a track hitting some corners at speed, all on the soundtrack provided by the V8, which is hitting all the right notes.

The video, which is over six minutes long, show the SLS AMG F1 Safety Car that is usually on standby in the pit lane. If Race Control decides an intervention is needed, Bernd Maylander and his co-driver, FIA man Pete Tibbetts (45, from Great Britain), take to the track at the head of the field in order to guide the Formula 1 racing cars safely around the circuit.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG replaces the SL 63 AMG, formerly used by the championship in back-to-back seasons - 2008 and 2009.

“Together with the entire AMG Team, I am very proud that the new SLS AMG is the official F1 safety car. I'm sure all Mercedes and AMG fans will be excited to see the gullwing model together with the new Mercedes GP Petronas Team at the F1 circuits,"
said Volker Mornhinweg, Chief Executive Officer of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

The F1 safety car actually uses the same engine, power transmission, suspension and brake system as the standard-production SLS AMG.That means it will be powered by the 6.3-liter AMG V8 engine producing 420 kW (571 hp), which is capable of pushing the supercar to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.8 seconds.

It will also feature the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission with double-clutch technology, plus ceramic high-performance composite brake system, which reduces brake fade to a minimum.
