Mercedes-Benz's Tuscaloosa plant has finally started producing the GLE Coupé as if the world needed another X6 roaming the streets. But that's another issue.
Just as its Bavarian counterpart, the GLE Coupé will try to attract clients by promising excellent handling and a sportier touch, despite the fact that we're talking about a full-sized SUV (or SAC - Sports Activity Coupé, if we were to use BMW's words).

Coming back to Mercedes' Tuscaloosa facility, it is worth noting that the Stuttgart-based car maker is also building the GLE, GL and the C-Class sedan there. In fact, the Alabama factory received a hefty funds injection rising to about $4,5 billion. The reason? A target of 300,000 units which should roll out of the factory this year.

"The production launch of the GLE Coupé is an important milestone in our growth strategy. In 2015 we will renew almost our full SUV portfolio and have therefore built up our capacities in the U.S. Together with the CClass, we will produce more than 300,000 vehicles in Tuscaloosa this year," said Markus Schäfer, Member of the Divisional Board Mercedes-Benz Cars.

This comes as a logical move after Mercedes-Benz made public the fact that they're going for world domination in the SUV segment but also want to wear the crown as the best selling premium manufacturer.

However, their rivals are not wasting time and since BMW is already a hard nut to crack, Audi is trying to make up for the lost ground with the new Q7, bound to hit the market this summer. We kind of miss the good ol' battle between these giants, so bring it on, guys.
