When Mercedes-Benz first decided to proceed to an all-out attack in the compact premium segment about half a decade ago, not everyone was expecting such a motley array of models to be sporting the three-pointed star in this segment nowadays.
As it turns out, the Mercedes-Benz MFA (Modular Front-wheel drive Architecture) platform comprises no less than four different models now, with a fifth one to be unveiled later this year.
Sporting a heavy technical connection with the sporty A-Class and the sexy CLA via the family-friendly B-Class, the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA is the crossover/SUV of the group.
In essence, to many people the GLA looks like a slightly larger A-Class on stilts, and you wouldn't be too wrong in saying that, especially since both cars share a similar interior, engine lineup and certain details from the exterior design.
In reality though, the GLA is quite a bit larger, is heavier, while the somewhat low ground clearance with the AMG sports package is still way higher than on an A-Class with the same specifications.
In order to see what all the fuss is about with the smallest crossover/SUV in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, the Brits from Recombu Cars decided to take a GLA 220 CDI 4Matic for a test drive, and their post-driving conclusions about the car seem to be pretty spot on with what we were expecting ourselves.
