While you and us were out driving the Mercedes SLS AMG, the engineers of the carmaker’s performance division did quite a lot of overtime work to come up with their second in-house project, the Mercedes-AMG GT. The team over in Affalterbach calls this the C190, with the vehicle currently being in the final testing phase. Thus, it was only natural for the sportscar to have been recently spotted trying its hand at lapping the Nurburgring.
We are currently in the period when the engineers aim to see just how much means too much for their upcoming child. What we don’t get too see in the video below is the interior of the car, but who needs that when Mercedes has already revealed the GT’s cabin?

Aficionados call this the C190 and the main thing about is that it will be a two-seater. This means that its main rival will be the Jaguar F-Type, but, as usual, the two-plus-two Porsche 911 is also in sight.

Unlike the SLS, which only used the naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter V8, albeit in three states of tune, the GT will come with an all-new AMG engine. Basically a “double or nothing” version of the M133 four-cylinder engine in the 45 AMGs, this will be a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. Forced induction will arrive via twin-scroll turbochargers placed in between the cylinder banks. By the way, this seems to be the norm in German engineering these days, with Audi’s 4.0 TFSI and BMW’s 4.4-liter S63 V8s using this layout as well.

Just like on the SLS, the powerplant will be placed in a front-mid configuration. The new engine should deliver about 500 HP and a peak torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft). Mind you, expect an extra-wide rev band for both the aforementioned values. The unit should work with a revised version of the SLS’ double-clutch transaxle.

While we wait for the Mercedes-AMG GT’s reveal, which is set for late August (public debut at October’s Paris Motor Show), AMG invites us to check out the sportscar’s microsite.
