There are probably few things that marketing and PR people hate more than product leaks, especially when they happen because of embargo breaches from trusted media outlets.
That is exactly what happened a few hours ago, when established German car magazine Auto, Motor und Sport “accidentally” leaked official photos with the rather gorgeous interior of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz AMG GT (C190).
The images have since been taken down from the AMS website, but not before the damage having been done. You can check out the photos in the adjacent galley and compare them with the spyshots we showed you a couple of weeks ago.
Still, it wasn't all that bad, as Mercedes-Benz revealed (just) two official photos themselves a few hours later.
As you can see, the center console from the upcoming three-pointed star sports car is closely following the new Mercedes-Benz interior design philosophy, with a symphony of leather and aluminium being the best choice of words to describe it, while the center tunnel buttons emulate the eight cylinders that are to be found under the hood of the model.
"The new Mercedes-AMG GT shows that we will be positioning AMG more vehemently and aggressively than to date as a dynamic sports car brand," notes Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "The technological substance of the Mercedes-AMG GT underscores our high aspirations with regard to driving dynamics, agility and sportiness. Following the global success of the SLS AMG, the new GT is the second sports car developed fully independently by Mercedes-AMG. An initial exclusive look at the design of the interior shows what is in store for our customers: a GT sports car in its purest form."
The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT is to be powered by an all-new four-liter V8 engine that is force-fed by two twin-scroll turbochargers.
Developed using two M133 turbocharged four-pots from the 45 AMG series models bonded together and internally-codenamed M178, the new engine has the turbochargers situated inside the cylinder lines, like the the Audi 4.0 TFSI and the BMW S63 powerplants.
Along with direct injection and twin-scroll turbochargers, this engineering solution is said to minimize turbo-lag and increase engine response to a level almost similar to a naturally-aspirated engine. Power levels are to be situated at above 500 hp and 700 Nm (516 lb ft) of torque, giving the front-mid engine sports car a naught to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration of under four seconds.
A more powerful S-Model version and a Black Series variant of the AMG GT are set to follow within two years after the production model is introduced later this year.
Using a modified version of the aluminium space frame from the SLS AMG, the upcoming Mercedes-Benz sports car will also be manufactured at the Sindelfingen plant, on the old SLS AMG production lines.
Expect more official details about the AMG model in the upcoming days, but it seems that it will not be unveiled at the New York Auto Show but this fall, with the actual launch to happen at the Paris Motor Show in October.
