Mercedes A-Klasse E-Cell Coming to Paris

The Paris Auto Show in October is expected to be the birth place for the alternative-powered vehicles of the recent future, with more and more manufacturers announcing their presence at the show with electric or hybrid variants of existing models.

Among them, the Germans from Mercedes Benz will introduce the A-Klasse E-Cell at the event, with a limited production run of 500 units to begin shortly after. There are no official technical details available yet, but according the The New York times, the car will be revealed before the Paris debut, in mid-September.

Sources told The New York Times that the A-Klasse E-Cell will be using a battery pack and controller sourced from American electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, in which Daimler holds a minority stake. According to Daimler spokeswoman Shirin Emeera, the E-Cell will have a range of 124 miles (200 km), a touch more than what other similar vehicles are offering, and will produce 214 lb-ft of torque.

The 500 test vehicles will have the same fate as other similar cars of other manufacturers. They will be either sold or leased to fleet operators and individuals mostly for testing purposes and will not be, at least at first, available for the masses.

Daimler does not plan, at least in the near future, to bring the A-Klasse E-Cell to the US.

The A-Klasse will form, together with the B-Klasse, the backbone of the Mercedes offering for the future. Both cars will be produced at two locations, in Kecskemet, Hungary (under construction) and Rastatt, Germany, from 2012 onwards.
