Mears Replaced by Sorenson at Red Bull

Reed Sorenson will take Casey Mears' spot in the #83 Red Bull Toyota starting the 17th round of this year's Sprint Cup Series, as confirmed by the Red Bull Racing team via an official statement. Therefore, after only 4 races spent in the Red Bull garage, Mears will resume his 2010 season with Tommy Baldwin Racing starting the race in Loudon.

Our unique situation has afforded us the opportunity to try some different things, and we're continuing to do that with Reed. We appreciate Casey's work and everything he's done the past five weeks,” announced Red Bull Racing vice president and general manager Jay Frye.

Mears had come to drive for Red Bull Racing starting the event at Dover in May, after Brian Vickers's medical condition - blood clots in his legs – prevented him from continuing to race in the 2010 Sprint Cup Series. In the 4 races he had to sustitute Vickers, Mears' best performance was a 22nd place in the Autism Speaks 400 at Dover International Speedway (his first race with the team).

Due to inconsistent race finishes with the team, Red Bull decided to give Sorenson a shot at making some weekend-to-weekend appearances in the 2010 season, as the 24-year old only made 3 starts in the Sprint Cup this year, failing to cross the finish line every time (competing for Braun Racing). Driving for the same team in the Nationwide Series, where he recorded 10 starts in 2010 so far, he scored four Top 5 finishes and has an average finishing position of 9.6.

As far as Mears is concerned, he will return to TBR, as his initial parting ways with the team happened on good terms. Consequently, team owner Tommy Baldwin confirmed a few hours later that Mears will resume his programme with TBR.

Casey is going to come back and we are excited. We hope to rebuild on some of the momentum created before he left,” said Baldwin.

Until the race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Mears' spot in the #83 Red Bull Toyota will be taken by 2-time DTM champion Mattias Ekstrom, making his first ever appearance in NASCAR.
