Mean-Looking Humvee Hides a Deluxe and Modern Tiny Home Interior, It Even Has a Bathroom

What we have here is a 1991 M997 FLA that used to serve as a military ambulance – you can check out the gallery to see a picture of what it used to look like. Roaming Ventures did this conversion. The company specializes in Humvee camper conversions meant to explore the outdoors. This seems to be the company's first conversion, which took about a year to make.

However, given how well it turned out, we will see more conversion from the Roaming Ventures team. Anyway, let's take a closer look at this rig.

Roaming Ventures found this particular unit on Facebook Marketplace. This vehicle sports a 6.5-liter V8 engine outputting 190 hp and 380 lb-ft. (515 Nm) of torque. Moreover, it can reach a maximum speed of 70 mph (113 kph) and has a ground clearance of 18 inches (almost 46 centimeters).

The first thing the company did was strip it and repaint it with a black Raptor Liner, which gives it an imposing, aggressive look while protecting it from scratches and other minor damage. What's more, Roaming Ventures sprayed part of the driver's cabin with the same protective coating.

This rig rides on 37-inch BFGoodrich Baja run-flat tires. Furthermore, it has 360-degree lighting, meaning it's equipped with LED light bars on all four sides, which properly light up its surroundings (check out the gallery to see how it looks).

On the driver's side of the vehicle, you'll notice a compartment holding an 8-gallon (30-liter) greywater tank. There's another identical compartment on the opposite that can serve as a storage space.

Since this was transformed into a camper, Roaming Ventures had to add some windows to the camper box, as the original vehicle didn't have any – it makes sense, as bullets could've pierced them. The team installed a window on each side of the rig, as well as two port holes at the rear. Oh, and there are four 100 W solar panels on the roof.

Let's head inside. The old military-style driver's cabin was completely transformed into a modern space. It comes with a new steering wheel, leather seats, a new dashboard, and more. The company also replaces the stock speedometer with a GPS-based one.

Between the driver's and passenger's seats, you'll find a small table with a cupholder, a backup camera system, and switches for the lights. Furthermore, the original 3-speed transmission was replaced with a 4-speed one, and Roaming Ventures added a shotgun shell as a shift knob – a minor yet very cool detail.

Above, you'll discover an A/C system and a golf cart sound bar with LED lights since the Humvee didn't have a sound system.

As you've seen, the outside looks rough and imposing. Well, the living space doesn't continue that theme, except for the black cabinetry and other dark elements. It's beautifully designed with a modern and minimalistic aesthetic.

To enter, you can go either through the driver's cabin or by opening the two rear doors and folding down two steps. The most significant transformation inside was for the ceiling – since the box is quite short, most people would hit their head on the ceiling, Roaming Ventures fitted a long skylight that lets plenty of light in while also increasing the height, enabling you to walk in the middle of the living space without bumping your head.

When entering from the rear, you'll find the bedroom on the right in the form of a long couch. The mattress offers enough space for a single person to sleep – it would've been nice to have a frame extension enabling you to make the bed bigger. Moreover, in the headboard area, there's a massive storage space and a TV attached to the wall.

On the opposite side, you'll notice the kitchen. It features a striking butcher block countertop, a two-burner stove, a deep sink, a relatively small Dometic fridge/freezer, two overhead cabinets, and two drawers. What's more, there's a cabinet underneath the sink that hides a water heater and a water filtration system.

The compact space between the kitchen/bedroom and the driver's cabin is occupied by a closet and something you were probably not expecting to find here: a bathroom. The closet is on the passenger side and boasts three big shelves.

The wet bathroom is finished with black hexagonal tiles and comprises a shower, an LED light bar, and a removable composting toilet. By the way, water inside this rig is provided by a 20-gallon (76-liter) tank mounted underneath the sink cabinet.

Roaming Venture used the two compartments above the driver's cabin for storage and to house a portable A/C and the power system. Its highlights are a 300 Ah lithium battery, a solar charge controller, a DC-DC charger enabling the system to charge from the vehicle's alternator, and a 3,000 W inverter/charger. Of course, like any proper camper, there's also the option of charging through a shore power connection.

All in all, Roaming Ventures has built a fantastic tiny home on wheels. I love its aesthetic inside out. Moreover, despite the compact space it offers, it packs numerous creature comforts that make off-grid travel possible. Pair that with the vehicle's off-road capabilities, and this rig is ready for adventures out in the wilderness.
