After two months of teasers, the time has finally come for McLaren to take the cover off its track-focused P1 GTR Design Concept, and boy is she gorgeous. Building on the P1 hypercar introduced last year, the P1 GTR is ready for racing with improved power output, unique aerodynamic tuning and plenty of upgrades to put the heat on cars like the LaFerrari, Porsche 918 Spyder and the Bugatti Veyron.
For starters, McLaren upped the tuning of this gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain from a 903 hp (915 PS) on the “standard” P1 to 986 hp, or an even 1,000 PS. McLaren did not specifiy how it squeezed the extra power from the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 or the electric motor, but it said both have been “motorsport optimized.” For improved handling, the P1 GTR has been given a fixed ride height and wider front track, while McLaren has borrowed from its Formula One racing experience with a Drag Reduction System (DRS) and a system similar to F1’s Energy Recovery System, which allows the driver to a push button that provides an extra boost of energy during passing.

The entire design of the McLaren P1 has been optimized for aerodynamics, and some of these changes include the fixed rear wing and massive center-mounted exhaust outlets made of inconel and titanium alloy as well as race-specific improvements like the center locking wheels and onboard air jack.

With this much power and performance on tap, McLaren is also providing owners a specialized driver’s training program in order to improve the “human performance” of the car. Although McLaren has not confirmed production of the P1 GTR, it seems to have its sights set on celebrating the 20th anniversary of the 1995 McLaren F1 GTR racer, which won the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans.
