McLaren goes down memory lane, announcing the brand will draw inspiration from the past to design future models. It is their way of saying that their cars are going to follow a new design language.
The 12C aesthetic did not live long. McLaren is doing a U-turn in terms of design and teasing a future car inspired by former models of the brand. The teaser image shows the outline of a next-generation supercar and unveils the five new principles that will shape the future of McLaren.

Therefore, the cars will have to be Epic, Athletic, Functional, Focused, and Intelligent and will find inspiration in McLaren's 60 years of racing heritage and road car portfolio. No matter the changes, the cars of the brand will remain cutting-edge and lightweight models with motor racing-injected DNA.

Epic is a reference to bold design that triggers an emotional reaction. The British brand is planning to infuse extreme design traits in future models, such as McLaren's F1 road car's central seating position or the jet-fighters-style sliding canopy of the Solus GT.

Athletic focuses on channeling out-of-this-world performance and agility enhanced by design elements such as the muscular bodywork, which is all in the name of aerodynamic efficiency and weight saving.

Functional confirms that McLaren chases performance by design, going for exposed technical elements, advanced aerodynamics, and cooling tech, as in the new Artura Spider and McLaren 750S.

Focused spins around the performance-driven ergonomics and impeccable visibility, enhancing the driving experience. McLaren also promises the perfect mix between analog and digital on board its future cars.

Intelligent refers to a smart design approach. Thus, the McLaren-branded vehicles will have to be engineered, designed, and finished with innovative and lightweight materials, which are ever stronger, more durable, and sustainable.

The all-new Performance by Design philosophy will target “new segments and future powertrain technologies.” This translates to EVs and SUVs, so it won't take long before we get to see an electric and a high-ride McLaren.

The move is taking shape under the surveillance of the company's new and old design boss, Tobias Suhlmann, who returned to the supercar maker after a stint at Bentley.

But no matter the segment or powertrain, all models will sport a low nose with two symmetrical elements with horizontal orientation. There will be large air intakes integrated into the front bumper, short overhangs, and the iconic Performance Line, which will actually be carried over from the McLaren Can-Ams, McLaren F1, and McLaren P1.

All future models will come with wraparound cockpits and a horizon-like view forward to kill any feeling of claustrophobia and allow the driver to focus exclusively on driving performance.

McLaren refrains from revealing a launch date for the first supercar to feature all the new and old design elements.
