McLaren Hints at Hybrid Supercar

McLaren Automotive is apparently interested in developing hybrid models as well, despite the company being fairly reticent when it comes to this particular subject. Nevertheless, the biggest hint that McLaren is indeed working on a hybrid supercar surfaced a few days ago when the manufacturer posted on its official website a job advertisement for a senior engineer in powertrain hybrid technology, as autocar.co.uk reported.

The future employee will have to "lead the technical assessment, integration and application of appropriate hybrid powertrain technology" and is required to "identify and support the progression of advanced powertrain technologies within McLaren Automotive, support hybrid powertrain design, development and integration activities and manage the definition and execution of development & validation activities.”

A McLaren spokesman refused to provide too many details on the matter, but admitted that hybrid powertrain is one of the technologies the manufacturer is looking at for the future models.

“It (hybrid technology) is something we want as a forward-thinking, technology-driven company. We have been considering it for future projects. All the advert means is that we are looking for a senior engineer in powertrain hybrid technology. Read into it what you will," he said.

McLaren is currently working on a new supercar, the P11, which is expected to be released sometime in 2011, with the first public appearance likely to take place at the Los Angeles Auto Show this year. Details are kept secret but the aforementioned source notes that it could boast a hybrid powertrain as well, with several technologies especially aimed at cutting fuel consumption and emissions, such as start-stop systems.
