UPDATED: Massive Taiwan Highway Accident Is a Classic Car Versus Truck Affair

Multi-lane highways are the most brilliant idea ever, but they do have one downside: they allow for multiple knuckleheads to be at the same time on the road.
In this case, however, all that was needed for the accident to take place was just the one knucklehead who thought it was a good idea to cut-off a large eighteen-wheeler. And by "cut-off", we mean slam it from the side and force it into a maneuvre that could have ended a lot worse for all those around it.

What the car causing all this was doing cruising on the emergency lane in the first place is beyond us, but it goes to strengthen the idea that its driver isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. He misjudges the space available between the truck and the SUV driving in front of it and clips the front right side of the eighteen-wheeler.

At highway speeds, even a car as small as the Nissan Tiida in question is enough to make the goods carrier veer left uncontrolled. The truck's driver then tries to counter by turning right, but he overdoes it and the truck begins to sway to the left because of the sudden mass transfer.

The Nissan Tiida driver who was at the heart of this accident is caught under the fallen trailer, but so is the driver of the black sedan driving on front of the car with the camera, who couldn't brake fast enough to avoid getting involved.

Since there's no info on the aftermath of the accident, we like to think nobody was severely hurt. While it does look very dramatic, the only real question is whether the upper structures of the two cars were able to protect their occupants from the falling trailer. If they did, then everybody should be OK. If not, we fear the worst. Anyway, the emergency rescue teams will have had a tough time getting those people out with a few good tons of metal sitting on top.

UPDATE: A second video of the incident this time filmed from a car behind the Nissan Tiida shows we got things all wrong. The Tiida proved to be a victim, just like the other car that got caught underneath the truck. First of all, the marking on the asphalt tricked us into believing it was driving in an emergency lane, which now appears to be false. Second, the truck can be seen signalling a lane change to the right, but somehow failing to notice the presence of a car there. What follows is an unfortunate accident caused by the truck driver's lack of awareness. We've added the second video below.
