Massa to Push for Safety Improvements When He Returns

Felipe Massa's accident during the Hungarian Grand Prix did not leave only visible marks on his face, but also affected the way he looks at today's safety measure inside the sport. Around the time of the incident, a number of similar accidents in motor racing happened as a result of flying debris, culminating with the death of F1 racer Henry Surtees (hit by a wheel during a race at Brands Hatch).

Looking back at what happened in Hungary, the Ferrari driver insisted that the FIA should take immediate actions to improve drivers' safety into the sport one way or the other. Although he doesn't have the solution to that problem right now, Massa vowed to talk to a representative of the governing body on his return and work something out.

“We need to look for improvements. I'm not saying we need to cover (the cockpit) completely. But maybe there are some other things we can do to the car to stop a wheel hitting your head. When I come back this is something I want to discuss with (the FIA's) Charlie Whiting, the FIA and the drivers – because we all need to work together,” said Massa in his interview with The Guardian.

In addition, he revealed the mixed feelings he had when hearing about Surtees' death, as he even warned his wife that those type of accidents can never be predicted or prepared for. Ironically enough, his traumatic accident was caused by the same effects as in Surtees' case.

“I was very touched by his (Surtees') death. And I told my wife straightaway about the accident of Henry ... 'Listen, this is what you need to be worried about. This is something you have no control over. It is not like a normal accident. And then a week after that ... it happened to me,” added the Brazilian driver.
