Massa Hopes New Teams Will Not Be A Danger

Not only Ferrari, but also its drivers believe the wave of new teams in Formula One are not a good thing for the sport in 2010. The Brazilian driver insisted that the gap in performance between the front-runners and the newcomers is huge – between 3 to 5 or even 6 seconds per lap – and will influence the entire action throughout the 2010 campaign.

With only Virgin Racing and Lotus F1 Team making it to the latest couple of tests during the month of February, one could easily notice that, besides the poor lap times recorded by their 2010 challengers, the cars also suffered from reliability issues as well as lack of parts. The third new entry for this season is Hispania Racing Team, an outfit that hasn't even tested their car prior to the season opening Bahrain GP.

It's not good for the sport and not good for them: it's like two different series,” said Massa, according to Ferrari's official website. While talking to Brazil's Globo on Sunday however, the Ferrari-an insisted he is not against allowing new teams to join the series, but against immense gap of performance between two different types of teams.

I read the stories in the press that I spoke badly about the new teams. I didn't do that, I just said the (lap) time difference (to the established teams) is too big. It cannot be good for anyone if a car is three seconds slower: not for the sport, for the people who watch, or for the teams themselves,” added Massa.

According to his previous statements, having a group of cars battling for the race win during every single event and another group of cars that will always fall behind by one lap after a short period of time will also make the sport more dangerous, as it will cause more traffic in the second part of the race and also qualifying.

I hope they won't be a danger. There are 6-7 teams one second apart while those teams are 4 seconds behind. They'll suffer. And we'll suffer too, when we have them in front of us during qualifying,” argued Massa.
